Love and Loathe

This week's love and loathes. I will try to do this weekly from now on as there's always a few things I'm fond of or hating from week to week.

High Street jewellery is not something I buy often, not because I don't like the designs but purely for quality reasons.

So many times have I fallen for a pretty pendant in Accessorize or Topshop, got home, worn it only twice and the colour fades or it breaks. I know it seems cheap and good value but I'd rather buy one good piece for £60 instead of 6 things that I know won't last.

However, I broke my rule this week after browsing Accessorize for a gift and spotted this gorgeous set of rings. I knew the colour would fade which it already has and the pearls would drop out which they did on the first day but I had to have it.

I love the faux pearls, cute birds and tiny diamante's in their eyes. They look great alone or together and it's the first time in a long time I'm thinking it was worth spending £8 on something I won't have forever.

I'll be happy with a few weeks more wear!

On to this weeks loathing, it has to be my acrylic nails. I'd barely had them two weeks and already five had dropped off, the rest looked tatty and had grown out a lot, in my eyes I'd never get them done again.

It's a shame because they do look amazing and I loved having pretty, feminine and long nails even if wasn't for long but the durability factor has definitely put me off for life!

The harshest thing I do on a daily basis is wash up so I'm disappointed they didn't last longer. Barely two weeks is lame for £35.

After walking around with half talons half stumps for two days I finally decided to be brave and remove the rest of the acrylics myself. One word OW!

As you can see my poor nails aren't in the best of condition following the ordeal, weak and peeling. I'm now on a mission to repair and lovingly grow my real nails.

What have you loved and loathing this week? P.S I will do a Mac palette post this week after so many requested it !

How are you removing your nails? Because it really shouldn't hurt or damage them. I soak mine in acetone and they dissolve, leaving my natural nails long and damage free!

Holly said...

@Andrea - yes, i soaked them in a removed which helped most but i got impatient and picked some off which hurt! My nails were weak before so not good :( xc

girl, does your beautician do the gel nails? 'cause if so I'd thoroughly recommend ~ they absolutely won't fall off, just grow out, and they're much more gentle on the nail bed. they also do them in colours ~ I had black ones for a month, and sure they didn't cost much more (if any) than gels

i think acrylics are amazing if you're sick of your nail polish chipping and for that elegant french manicure. i find that they're so much more fussfree than naturals! looking at the pictures, the person who did your acrylics did a shoddy job - bumpy and the acrylic didnt start at the cuticle! defo try them again! x

I have UV Gel nails, my mother got them done once at a salon, then she said she wanted me to do it for her.
We bought equipment off ebay (various gels & UV lamp, I'd say in total for the price of three manicures) and Ive been doing it on her and eventually me for three months now. What I put on lasts very well luckily, we're both super happy!

I'll just assume you've already had gel nails before, but if not Id really recommend them. Doing them yourself is very practical imo, but it also takes a while, for me about two hours every two weeks Id say.

The rings are so pretty! <3

Love the ring combo from Accessorize! This week I am loving...Accessorize as you know.ha ha. I'm also loving Mac Woodwinked & Shale e/s, the fact that the sun has finally come out and the thought of wearing my new hair extensions! The thing I'm loathing is Queen of Shaves Ta-Da Shaving gel...it broke my legs out in sore itchy rash even though it contains tea tree...weird and annoying!Great post :)

ring is lovely!!!

Are you sure your acrylics were well done? My friend has got hers done and they lasted a month. the aesthetician also told her that she could keep them more!

Hopefully your lovely little nails will heal soon :( If you have an olive oil based hand cream, or olive oil itself try to treat them with that everyday...

Hey hun, I think it depends on the nail technician who do your nail.. I am not one but my bf is. He used to do my nails b4 and it lasted at least for nearly 3 weeks (no dropping, breaking whatsoever). I only stopped when I started my uni as it get difficult to type.

Im not sure about other cities, but whenever you go to London, visit Edgware or Elephant Castle and have your nails done for 15 pounds dear. And it lasts =)

I used to have acrylics but gave up on them after having a similar experience to you. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give biosculpture a go. It wasn't cheap at £32 but so far, I love it. Basically the nail tech applies a gel coating to your natural nails in several layers, allowing each layer to set under a UV light. The gel doesn't damage your nails at all, in fact, it contains proteins so strengthens them. I have to go back again in few weeks for them soaking off and reapplying and, although it's pretty pricey, for me it's worth it as I don't have to faff around with them every other day, filing and repainting them! I'd really recommend looking into it :) x

That sucks re the nails when i had them done years ago now they lasted well on my nails even though i was a tad scared to do anything incase they dropped off. My falze nails last me months (Even though i can re-glue them if they come off) & i think they look alot more natrual x

how weird, i bought the exact same ring yesterday from accessorize. the pearls have yet to fall out but im sure it is only a matter of time. you should take yours back and exchange it for a new one - they should do it as the ring is faulty.

Loving the ring, so cute. I always make the mistake on cheap jewellery and I'm left with green fingers :( xx

That's a shame the acrylics didn't work out...Sally Hansen's nailgrowth miracle is amazing for getting your natural nails back on track though! x

Those rings are so cute. I love the bird one.
You should put some clear nail varnish over the jewellery. I put it on all my high street bought jewellery, especially on the inside of my rings and it stops my fingers going green and also to stop anything falling off and to prevent it changing colour. :)

darling! try the no chip manicure. they are like a varnish but last longer than most, 2-3 weeks if kept properly. there are DIY kits at home but you need to buy the UV lamp which is a pretty penny, but overall a money saver in the long run.

they make my nails stronger and enforced and i absolutely love them.

Oh wow, that is bad (with the nails).
I have no problems with mine - I usually go 3 weeks before I get infills.
The only time I had problems was when I worked in a pub - nails being constantly wet make them lift - a lot! Lol. xx

Treat yourself to a bottle of OPI Nail Envy. It will sort your nails out and they will be long and lovely in no time! x

I love cheap jewelry, but it does tend to irritate my skin (and turn it green) as well as fade really quickly. But I love my Topshop/Forever 21 jewelry! The first thing I do when I bring them home is coat it with clear nail polish. That really helps them last much longer, and it keeps the metal from touching my skin so my skin doesn't break out. I learnt that from my grandmother, who would coat all her cheap earring posts with clear nail polish.
