Lacquer love!

Looking at my current nail polish collection it's hard to believe that just over six months ago I owned less lacquers than I can count on my fingers.

With most things beauty I go through obsessive stages, one month it's blush the next lipgloss, my only constant addiction has been lipsticks which I'm sure you all know I have zero restraint for.

Nail polish is quickly catching up though, I love the fact that you don't have to spend a lot to find a great polish, it's one of the only items that I really think goes against the belief ' you get what you pay for'.

At least 90% of my collection are from the drugstore, most costing less than £5 each. I find it really difficult to justify spending more than that on one when I know how great the cheaper ones are.

If I ever buy an expensive polish which rarely happens it's because the blogger hype got to me or it's a really unique shade.

On to storage, hopefully it may give you some ideas for your collection.

Up until recently my polishes were kept in a cardboard box not great visually or organisation wise all piled on top of each other.

While talking to a good PR friend she told me she stored hers in a fish bowl and how great it looked to have all the colours on display.

Genius! It seems such a shame to hide them.

I did think about venturing into my local Pets at Home store on my search but going into a pet shop with a persuasive four year old can only lead to one thing, something small and furry!

Instead I went somewhere much safer, TKMaxx.

Ok, so it isn't quite a bowl more of a half bowl on one leg but it still works and looks great on my dressing table.

I also use a divider for the polishes that I have quite a few of from the same brand.

Again from TKMaxx, it has six compartments and is pretty but at the same time functional. I love going to the home section of TKMaxx, most things aren't necessarily made for make-up storage but are easily converted!

Like I said above drugstore polish rocks, here are my fave brands:

  • Mavala - £3.49 Tiny and great quality but perfect for those of us that only use the same colour a few times.
  • Barry M - £2.99 Fab colours and good quality, always on offer too!
  • Revlon - £6 something! Love these, amazing quality and on trend colours.
  • Sue Moxley - around £4 Gorgeous shades and a great matte range.
  • Collection 2000 Hot Looks - £2 Great colours
  • 17 Lasting Fix - £2 something Nice quality, lasting power and on trend shades.
  • N.Y.C Quick Dry - £2.99 Love these, such great quality and colours!

Talking of N.Y.C here is my current colour of the week, Canal Street.

There is only one word to describe this shade, beautiful!

I've been wearing it all week and I love it, this warm reddy/purpley brown is perfect for Autumn.

Not as harsh as black this deep shade looks really amazing on the nails. It has so many colour dimensions to it that it changes constantly, there are tones of red, purple, copper and brown.

Do you spend or save your nails? Any more brands I should know about?

Great storage ideas, I love TK Maxx homewares and a huge new store has just opened here. I use mostly OPI and Essie, but buy them from American ebay so they cost they same as brands like Rimmel here. I have a few Chanel polishes too which I love.

Hi holly,i completely agree with what you say about the cheaper brands when it comes to nail polish.I will not spend x amount on a high end brand when i can spend £5 on a models own polish that looks completely the same colour.Though like you i am sometimes swayed by all the hype from other bloggers and will give in and spend x amount only to find i have a polish close to the colour i just purchases that probably cost me £2.99 haha xx

Just found your blog today and love the first post I read.

I have to say, I go through the same phases like you, lol.

This January saw me buy tons of eyeshadows, followed by nail polishes in March and lipsticks/glosses in the summer.

You should check out the £1 MUA colours in Superdrugs. I picked up one to see if I liked it or not, and found the application really easy. The formula was a tad runny but better that that clumpy, plus the pigmentation's good. No chipping yet, on Day 3.

Love the fishbowl idea, I always worry about storing them on their side though? I'm going to give it a whirl and see how they handle it!

So far I've only tried drugstore products - but I plan on picking up some Chanel nailpolishes next.

My favourite brand at the moment is Rimmel Pro finish. The wide brush is amazing and the colour goes on so smoothly. Often, 1 coat is enough.

Aw cute storage..
I have maybe 50/60 polishes as most are OPI or ESSIE..
I can't quite shake the feeling of "the more expensive the better" although I should, as I don't wear one colour very much, so it's likely that those £10 bottles might dry up!!
Great storage you gave hon x

My favourite polishes are Revlon and OPI (when they are on special offer!)
very pretty storage - I must sort out storage of my make-up soon as its overtaking me!

Barry M is my absolute fave, have all of mine lined up on my shelf. I like the Nails Inc shades too but they always seem to chip quite easily, don't know if that's just me.

I probably have about a tenth of the polishes you have though!

Great storage idea! they looks lovely in your half fish bowl on one leg lol.

isn't it best to store nail polish standing up though? I thought I heard that somewhere? :s

I'm also starting to built a collection of nail polishes too! Before I wasn't obsessed...I only had or two shades to begin with and then NOW I've got loads, haha. Most of them are Rimmel - I love the 'maxi brush' applicators for just one coat (sometimes two coats but still great). I also have a few Maybelline, Barry M, NYC Color, No7 and Revlon. Rimmel & Revlon are on top of my list for best quality in my opinion. Btw, thanks for your previous post about the free Ciate nail polish in Marie Claire - thanks to u I wouldn't have known about it as I rarely buy mags lol. I got the burgundy shade which is fab and the quality is fab! I had the nail colour for more than a week and still in great condition:) Although I wouldn't buy it for it's original pricetag it's too expensive!

I love the fish bowl idea - my collection is getting a bit out of hand but they're all stored in a big box for the time being. I think i'll have to venture to TK Maxx and see what they have as i'd love to improve my storage :)

i completely agree with you saying cheaper polishes are just as good as higher end ones. i've got dozens of supermarket brand polishes that last for days and days without chipping and dry instantly too!
also - love the divider

Before blogging, I didn't have any polishes.... now I can't even count them! :)
I have been obsessed by nail varnishes and can't stop buying them! I need to find a good place for storage, but I need something bigger, maybe with drawers.

That is an envious collection and makes me fele like i need to shop more! x

Love your polish storage!
I have about 20 nail polishes and always go for drugstore although if I could afford OPI I would buy them as every time I've had an OPI manicure it's lasted so long! 17 polishes are my drugstore favourite - cheap but good quality and they're always bringing out new colours. x

@kailyn - Yes I am pretty sure its the same :) xx

@cupcake - I'm not sure but I have heard that, apparently they should be in the fridge too, not sure mines big enough haha xx

Hi! I'm also a recent polish hoarder - I've gone from about 7 to 40 in 6 months. It's blogging, I tell you. It gives you an excuse to buy anything. I have to say though, I do get duped into buying the off pricey polish... usually shortly before finding an exact dup for pennies! See my post on Paradoxal for more on THAT! Love the blog,

Great ideas. I'm not an expert in nail polish, but I love to understand how others feel about it. Your blog is great, thank you

I dont even have a 1/5 of what you have.. suddenly i feel so much better about my collection! I thought it was too big hehe xx

The bowl is a great idea! I have so much polishes that I keep one half in my beautycase and the other half in a big ugly box. Have you seen the nailpolishrack? I love them but I don't have any room for it to hang it in my room so this bowl is a good replacement idea.

new to your blog but loving it! funny, i just did my nails... i do have really bad experiences with drugstore nail polish as it contains ingredients that weaken my nails a lot, and i find that it chips much faster. that's why i tend to stick to chanel le vernis, but i only buy shades i'll wear to death! and OPI of course. both brands go on so beautifully and don't wear out my nails completely!

maybe it's because i just have weaker nails..

Mmm, completely agree, love the tk maxx homeware section, to me it just feels nice standing between those shelves, could just be that i'm a bit weird! As for polishes I would definetly recoomend Model's Own, their polishes are brilliant quality, lovely colours, and are only £5! I would also recommend the Rimmel Matte Topcoat, it can copletely change a polish, can't remenber how much it costs though, think it is about £4 roughly.
