Chanel Perfection Lumiere -an initial review!

When Chanel announced they were discontinuing two of their best selling foundations, Pro and Mat (my HG) Lumiere, to replace them with one super, do it all, base I was mortified. Mat Lumiere, you see is my 'go to' foundation and one I always go back to.

My skin is hard to please and there haven't been many over the years that have worked quite so well on it, but the news of an improved version softened the blow a little.

The minute it hit counters last week I snapped it up and for the past week it's all I've worn. Although one week isn't quite enough to warrant a full review, it is however just enough to give an initial impression.

I would love to say I'm blown away by Perfection Lumiere but unfortunately this isn't the case. I like it so far but I don't LOVE it yet. I'm hoping it's a grower.

  • colour wise the selection is good, Chanel have produced 23 shades with multiple undertones so there should be one to match most.
  • smooth and easy to apply but very fast drying, blending needed immediately.
  • the scent is AMAZING! Fruitier and fresher than the usual Chanel smell.
  • coverage is good, it is mid-heavy.
  • I have oily skin and it is drying even on me! Those with DRY skin should stay well away.
  • The finish is NOT the most natural or undetectable, it is quite powdery. Keep it away from the eye area!
  • although advertised as luminous it is NOT, Pro lovers I feel will not get on with it's very matte finish.
  • Lasting power is average, I get oily very quickly and this lasts about 5 hrs without the need to blot/powder but if you have normal skin it would last well.

You know I love my lengthy and in depth reviews so I'll update you on this one in a few weeks for sure. Did you rush out and pick up Perfection Lumiere too? What do you think?xxx

Oo enjoyed this- I have been using mine for the past10/11 days and still stick my my inital review. I think you have noticed the same points, blend quickly, moisturise before and work it in. I need to use mine through a whole cycle before I decide how it properly performs xx

Ps have you added yourself to the blogger height wall? You post quite a few fashion looks so it would be interesting to see how tall you are! http://5foot10.blogspot.com/p/blogger-heights.html xx

This is really helpful Holly, thanks! I was browsing the Chanel counter yesterday, enquiring about Mat Lumiere (I also have very oily skin) as I've heard it's very good from yourself and others. The consultant said that she thinks this is even better but I'm sure Mat Lumiere lovers would beg to differ. I'm glad I held off and will wait for your second review :)

Agree with this post!

I have found the wear to make me less oily than usual, which is weird, but I do completely agree with the fact that it makes my skin look drier!

MY skin NEVER looks dry after applying foundation, but it genuinely seemed to stick to every single tiny bit of dry skin which would never normally show up with any other foundation, it's very weird indeed.

I bought mine on a complete whim, and I do like mine as well, but I'm not sure whether I love it or not yet. We shall see! I love the bottle, though, looks great :) xx

I have and Ill be honest I love it!

Iv combo skin at mo and this is lovely. I apply at 7am and remove at 9pm and there is still a fair bit that comes off on the muslin cloth!

I never got on with Pro and never tried Matte. I was using Aqua until this came out and I find for the winter and fuller coverage this is better but I will defo be getting my aqua again in the summer!

I agree it sets quickly so blending has to be fast, not a bad thing!

Hope it wows in the next few weeks

xx

Will look forward to in-depth review, I think I'm going to *have* to get this, even though initial responses from fellow bloggers are not great, I fear it will be too drying on my non-oily areas. I too was devastated to find that Chanel were discontinuing the others. I was wondering whether to try out the new illuminating base also, hmmm will have to ponder that one for a while! I did buy the Illusion de Ombre in mirifique based on your review and am in love, so thanks Holly xx

I got a sample or 2 of this and at first application hated it...hard to blend and very very matt..and i have oily skin and love matt...then after 5-10 mins it settled and i loved it..colour (30) was perfect, coverage was great... untill about 5 hours later...then i looked in the mirror and saw a dry patchy mess on my forehead. Same even if i moisturize beforehand...something that i never have to do when using doublwear (hg)...so its a miss for me...its just too drying which i never thought i would say having oily skin.

I can't believe from what I have read that they got rid of two amazing foundations with one that doesn't meet the mark! Won't be trying this is a hurry, thanks for the good review! xx

Hey Holly!
I have been using this foundation for the past week and i too, have a review on my blog. I agree with you- at first i didn't love it, it was just OK- nothing special!
But a friend recommended that i try it with the Beauty Blender Sponge- and it worked brilliantly! My main gripe with this product was the fast-drying and tricky application- using a damp beauty blender sponge completely transformed this foundation and made it so easy to apply and gave a VERY natural finish- more natural than if you were to use your fingers/foundation brush.
This foundation applied with the BBS, turns it from an average, ok product- into a very nice, matte-but-natural foundation! I highly recommend the BBS- it is the perfect applicator for this product- or any other matte, fast drying foundations. The BBS also works great with my MAC cream blush in Lady Blush.
Its fantastic- can't recommend it enough!
Hope you had a great weekend and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this foundation- i have oily skin too, so your suggestions are always very useful to me!
Love Claudia xoxo

Oh damn, I was expecting it to be better than that. It sounds like it's just not very easy to work with? I had high hopes for this since I saw Lisa Eldridge using it, I still want to try it. The only reason why I didn't pick it up yet is because I still have tons left of my pro lumiere, and I'm loving the Aqua for evening...I like how chanel is experimenting with different smells, I would appreciate if they changed the lipstick smell, I know some people love it, but it always seems kind of rank to me..x

i think i will stick to my doublewear unless i pick up a sample and find its amazing, ive tried hundreds of foundation over the years and always go back to doublewear, just like i buy lots of highlighters and always go back to mac by candlelight, why do i do it lol.xx

I have this foundation and I love it. Perhaps because I use Clarins Beauty Flash Balm beforehand, I have not experienced it making me look dry... but I do love the coverage and scent!

Hi! New follower and I love your blog already=) I just purchased this foundation about 3 weeks ago and LOVE it. your description was exactly how I would describe it. Besides the price (!) I'd say it was 10!

I bought the Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation and absolutely love it, I nearly bought this but had read another review saying it created dry patches

Totally agree with your comments. I have had this foundation for 2 months and it looks cakey every time. Yikes! You are so right! Away from the eyes area!

I asked for a few samples of this perfection lumiere foundation and I've finally found the right shade for me. I didn't bother to powder as it gives a liquid to powder finish which I personally like. I also have oily skin. I was really impressed with this foundation as it controlled shine very well (tested it for 5hrs without blotting). I will definitely buy this foundation sometime this week.
